The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, Laurens County Coroner’s Office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division following the discovery of a body on Broadway Lane in Waterloo yesterday.
The discovery was made during the continued search for 87 year old Edwin Geer, whose been missing from Chappells since October 6.
Chappels is about 15 miles from where the body was discovered, and several miles from where Geer’s truck was found, according to the NCSO.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the body belongs to Geer.
“The release of a missing person’s name as the confirmed identity of these remains is premature, inaccurate, and irresponsible. While we understand the public’s interest in this investigation, evidence suggesting a possible identity does not constitute a positive scientific identification.
Our responsibility is to ensure that every identification is supported by reliable scientific evidence and that the appropriate next of kin are properly notified before any public announcement is made. We will not compromise the integrity of this process or the dignity of the families involved for the sake of being first to release information.”
The Disappearance of Edwin Geer
On October 6, 2026, Edwin Geer was last seen at his residence in the Summerset Bay community of Chappells, South Carolina. He hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
A concerned neighbor contacted authorities after noticing his mail had not been collected. Geer lives alone, and is considered endangered due to his age and medical condition(s).
Investigation
Edwin’s tan 2002 Chevrolet Pickup truck with South Carolina license plate XEZ770 is also missing. His cell phone does not appear to be powered on or connected to the network.
Deputies went to Geer’s home for a welfare check, but were unable to make contact with him. Investigators later spoke with his daughter in Florida, who told them she had not heard from him in several days.
There were no signs of a struggle in or around his home.
There have been possible sightings of Geer in Greenwood and Laurens counties, though they have not been verified.
