On November 13, 2013 the McStay family was found murdered in the desert near Victorville, California.
Charles Merritt, Joseph McStay’s business partner, was arrested in November of 2014 and charged with their murders. Merritt owed Joseph McStay more than $40,000, and began forging checks to himself from Joseph’s account after the family’s disappearance.
On November 13 2017 the trial was waived until February 13, 2018. Jury selection for the case began on October 29, 2018.
Charles Merritt was found guilty on four counts of first degree murder on June 10, 2019. The verdict came after jurors deliberated for a week after a trial that lasted nearly five months. On January 21, 2020 Merritt was sentenced to death.

On June 3, 2021 authorities announced Frank Sumner as a suspect in the murder of Molly Bish. Sumner was convicted of rape and kidnapping of a 21 year old woman in 1982, and had been paroled in 1998. He lived in the central Massachusetts area until his death in May of 2016.
