During his first appearance in court after his arrest in May, Raymond Moody appeared in court this morning and entered a guilty plea in the Brittanee Drexel murder case.
62 year old moody pleaded guilty to the murder, kidnapping and rape of Brittanee Drexel. He was sentenced to life in prison for murder, plus consecutive 30 year sentences for kidnapping and for rape.
On April 25, 2009, 17 year old Drexel disappeared while on spring break in Myrtle Beach. She was last seen at 8:45 pm, captured by surveillance cameras leaving the Blue Water Resort. She texted her boyfriend, saying she was walking back to the Bar Harbor Hotel, but never made it back to her room.
Police tracked her phone’s last signal to an area along U.S. Route 17 near the Georgetown County and Charleston County line. The signal stopped abruptly on the morning of April 26, 2009.
In May of 2022 Moody was arrested in connection to her disappearance. Investigators say Moody confessed to the crime and led police to the location of Drexel’s body in Georgetown County, 35 miles south of Myrtle Beach. According to arrest warrants, Drexel’s cause of death was manual strangulation by Moody.
Moody was considered a person of interest in Brittanee’s disappearance back in 2012, but authorities didn’t have enough evidence to arrest him until earlier this year.
He spent 21 years in prison for the abduction and rape of a 9 year old girl back in 1983, and has been considered a suspect in similar cases but was never charged.
