Case Information
29-year-old Nancy Ng was last seen in Lake Atitlán, Guatemala on October 19, 2023. She disappeared during a kayak excursion while on a week-long yoga retreat.
Background
Nancy Ng was born on June 28, 1994. She is the eldest of four siblings.
Nancy graduated from California State University with a law degree. She worked as a behavioral interventionist aide at Garfield Elementary School in the Alhambra Unified School District where she assisted students with disabilities.
In 2023, Nancy Ng was a resident of Monterey Park, California. She loves yoga, traveling, and hiking.
Disappearance
On October 14, 2023, Nancy Ng left the US to embark on a week-long yoga retreat in Guatemala. She had been a yoga enthusiast for about four years and her trip to the “Be the Change” yoga retreat was her second in two years.
Around 10:30 am on October 19, 2023, Nancy went for a kayak excursion with a group of ten participants on Lake Atitlán, known as the deepest lake in Central America.
Nancy was last seen by a participant named Christina Blazek when the two bumped into each other in the middle of the lake. They chatted for a while and Nancy said she wanted to go for a swim.
Christina Blazek cautioned against the idea, but Nancy jumped into the water anyway, pushing their kayaks away. Blazek tried to keep Ng’s kayak from drifting off in the current, and when she turned around Nancy was nowhere to be seen.
Nancy never returned from the kayaking excursion and hasn’t been heard from since.
Christina Blazek went to get help and a distress call was sent out. A missing person report was filed with local authorities the following day.
Investigation
On October 24, 2023, a team of private helicopters, boats, divers, and drones hired by the Ng family conducted an extensive search around Lake Atitlán but found no signs of Nancy.
The participants in the kayak excursion left Guatemala within 8 to 12 hours of Nancy’s disappearance and were therefore unable to cooperate with the search teams to provide them with crucial information.
Two participants of the yoga retreat later claimed that Kayak Guatemala, the company that rented out kayaks and paddleboards, did not offer anyone a life vest nor take any safety precautions before the excursion.
The Guatemalan government remains the lead agency on the investigation, although FBI officials are also working the case.
Whereabouts
Authorities believe that Nancy Ng drowned while out on the lake, although her body has never been found. Her case is currently classified as missing and remains unsolved.
