Background
Marilyn Brinson was born on November 19, 1954. She lived with her husband in the 2000 block of Northeast Russell Road in Kansas City, Missouri. The couple had four children together.
Marilyn worked as a clerk at Texico Start Mart, located at 169 and Northeast 68th Street. Her husband worked as a machine operator at a wastewater treatment plant.
Disappearance
Marilyn Brinson’s husband, John Brinson, says he last saw his wife on the night of July 16, 2022, at their home on Northeast Russell Road.
He says when he woke up the next morning she was gone. At first he assumed she had left for work, but her co-workers soon called to ask why she hadn’t arrived.
Upon learning she hadn’t made it to work, John called the Kansas City Police Department to report his wife missing.
Investigation
On the evening of July 16, 2002, Marilyn’s vehicle, a 1995 green Ford Taurus, was found in the middle of 24th Street and Topping Avenue. The car had been burned, and a large amounts blood were found inside.
The blood patterns inside the car indicate someone was likely in the passenger seat of the car, huddled up against the door, trying to get away from someone with a gun.
A partly burnt paper towel was stuffed in the gas tank intake pipe. Organisms typically found in river water were found in samples of mud on the trunk, as well as underneath her husband’s fingernails.
Investigators also found large amounts of blood in the parking lot of her apartment complex. The blood from the car and parking lot were both later determined to be Marilyn’s.
There is no way Marilyn could have survived so much blood loss, and no area hospitals have any records of having treated her.
On August 14, 2002, Marilyn’s husband, John Brinson, was charged with her murder after his hand print in Marilyn’s blood was found in the trunk of her car.
The couple’s adult sons told authorities that Marilyn and John had been arguing the night before her disappearance. Brinson himself admitted that shortly before Marilyn went missing he had learned she was having an affair, though he claimed to have had nothing to do with her disappearance.
John was tried for Marilyn’s murder in June 2005, however the judge declared a mistrial during the proceedings.
John was retried in 2006, and in October of that year was convicted of first degree murder for the murder of Marilyn. He was sentenced to life in prison, and died there in 2017.
Marilyn’s body has never been found. Prosecutors believe John Brinson disposed of her body in or near the Missouri River, then tried to destroy the evidence by torching her car.
