Case Information
37 year old Kathleen Haley was last seen in Newport News, Virginia on September 1, 2012. She disappeared after making plans to stop by her sister’s house for dinner.
Background
At the time of her disappearance, Kathy was living alone in an apartment in the 2800 block of West Avenue in downtown Newport News, Virginia. She worked as a dancer at Headlights, a local club.
She had a boyfriend who had moved to Germany about a month before she went missing.
Described as a private person by loved ones, she kept in contact with her family at least once or twice a week. They say it’s uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning.
Disappearance
On September 1, 2012, Kathleen Haley spoke with her sister and made plans to stop by for dinner that evening, and also mentioned having plans for later that night.
Kathy never showed up to her sister’s house and hasn’t been heard from since. Her one year old Boxer dog Molly (pictured below) is also missing.
Her family reported her missing to the Newport News Police Department on September 7, 2012.
Investigation
Upon entering Kathy’s apartment, investigators immediately found evidence suggesting foul play.
Cleaning supplies and several pairs of rubber glove were found in her bathroom, as well as clothing with bloodstains in a laundry basket, and blood on her bedroom wall.
Investigators collected 17 swabs of “suspected blood” from the apartment’s walls, bedroom, and kitchen, according to court documents.
Her computer and bed were missing; the box spring and mattress were later found outside near a dumpster. A section of carpet in her bedroom had also been cut away and removed.
Kathy’s car was found unlocked inside the apartment complex parking lot. Kathy is only 4’11, but the car seat was pushed all the way back, indicating someone much taller had driven it last.
Witnesses recall an unidentified man, described as a white male with blonde hair, going in and out of Kathy’s apartment on or around September 4. He was seen walking to the dumpster with his arms full of something that appeared to be rolled up, possibly bedding.
Police released a sketch of the unidentified man on September 8, 2012. His identity remains unknown.
Loved ones say it would be unusual for Kathy to have left her car unlocked, or to give someone else a key to her apartment.
There has been no activity on Kathy’s credit card, bank account, or cell phone since she disappeared.
Whereabouts
The whereabouts of Kathleen Haley, as well as the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, remains unknown.
Foul play is suspected in her disappearance, though no arrests have been made. Her case remains unsolved.
Appearance
White female with brown hair and hazel eyes. Kathleen stands 4’11 tall and weighs 100-120 pounds.
She often wore a homemade gemstone necklace and small stud earrings.
