Disappearance
On May 31, 2017, Julia Ann Bean was last seen by her daughter in the Red Bay Road area of Sumter, South Carolina. The two had plans to get manicures that day and Bean showed up at the nail salon with an unknown man driving a dark truck.
The man told her daughter that he owned lake houses and big boats if she ever wanted to have a boat party. He also offered to take her to a concert and said he wanted to marry Bean.
Bean’s daughter, who was scheduled to graduate from high school the next day, gave the man two tickets so he could attend the ceremony with Bean.
Bean never showed up to her daughter’s graduation ceremony and hasn’t been heard from since.
On November 18, 2017, her family filed a missing person’s report with the Sumter Police Department when they couldn’t contact her.
Investigation
Bean left behind her wallet, cell phone, and keys at home. She had $5,000 in the bank, as well as cash in her purse. She also left some drugs on a table at home.
Bean didn’t have a cellular phone at the time of her disappearance.
Rex Heuermann Identified as Suspect in Gilgo Beach Murders
In July 2023, 59-year-old Rex Heuermann was arrested in New York and charged with the murders of three women (out of eleven) whose remains were found buried on Gilgo Beach along Ocean Parkway in Long Island, New York in 2010.
Heuermann pleaded not guilty to charges of first and second-degree murder in the deaths of Amber Lynn Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, and Megan Waterman. The victims were sex workers who advertised online between 2009 and 2010.
Heuermann was an architect who lived with his wife and children in Massapequa Park, an incorporated village in Long Island, New York, about a half-hour drive to Gilgo Beach.
He owned a Chevrolet Avalanche truck, as well as a property inhabited by his brother in a wooded area in Chester County, South Carolina, about a two-hour drive from the Red Bay Road area where Bean was last seen.
Gilgo Beach Murders Suspect Linked to Missing South Carolina Woman
Bean’s daughter told police that she recognized Heuermann as the man with the dark truck who was last seen with her mother, but that he introduced himself under a different name.
Rex Heuermann is the main suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders, but authorities have been unable to prove a connection with Julia Ann Bean’s disappearance.
