Case Information
20 year old Jason Ellis was last seen in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 4, 2006.
He was last seen at his apartment on Willow Tree Lane that he shared with a couple of friends. He was reported missing by his mother a week later when she hadn’t heard from him.
Disappearance
Jason was last seen at 9820 Willow Tree Lane, Apartment C on December 4, 2006. He had been living there with a couple of friends from high school.
His mother reported him missing a week later when she couldn’t get in touch with him.
One of the people at the apartment allegedly told investigators that Jason had left and taken his belongings with him. However, his car was found still parked at the apartment, and his last two paychecks were sitting untouched on his debit card.
At the time of his disappearance, Jason’s mother Neatrice Billingsley, had just wired him some money to replace the radiator in his car.
His roommates were out of town at the time, and didn’t think anything of it when they returned and found him gone.
His mother said she found one of his shirts when she drove to Indianapolis to file a missing persons report. Jason, a Merrillville native, had moved to Indianapolis a few months before he disappeared.
His mother said Jason would have found a way to get in touch if he were still alive.
Investigation
When investigators searched the apartment they found Jason’s comforter missing, lending credence to a theory that he was perhaps beaten to death and buried in the comforter, but investigators couldn’t find any evidence of a struggle inside the apartment.
Indianapolis Metro Police Detective Charles Gold took over the “cold case” investigation in 2008. He said he’s chased several leads, but came up empty. He agreed with Jason’s mother that Ellis would have found a way to get in touch if he were still alive.
In 2010 authorities told local media that they suspected Ellis was the victim of a homicide, but they did not elaborate.
His mother said Jason’s case got no media coverage when he went missing, and that no search parties were formed. She said she went looking through the garbage bins and ponds herself near the area where he was last seen. She tried reaching out to newspapers in Northwest Indiana to cover his case, but to no avail.
She died in 2013, without ever knowing her son’s fate.
Police are unsure about what happened to Jason, though he is presumed dead. Investigators have theorized that he may have been killed by members of a drug ring based in either Chicago or Gary. His case remains unsolved.
