36 year old Mikhail Fountain has been sentenced to life without parole for the murder of Kayla Atwood. He was convicted of second degree murder in January.
Kayla, a mother of four, disappeared in January 2024 after dropping her children off at school. She was last seen getting into a yellow Penske box truck in the 2300 block of West Belmont Street.
Kayla’s ex boyfriend, Mikhail Fountain, was taken into custody in connection with her disappearance on January 9, 2024.
Investigators found that the driver of the Penske truck did drop Kayla off at home around 2:30 pm on January 3. She was then picked up by someone in a truck matching the description of one owned by Fountain.
Fountain spoke to Kayla’s neighbors around 4:30 pm that day and asked to view their surveillance footage. After authorities gained access to those filed they realized a large number of them had been deleted.
On January 9, 2024, Kayla’s remains were found in a shallow grave near the intersection of Fairfield Drive and Crow Road in Escambia County on Thursday evening.
Fountain, who was released on bond earlier that day for a tampering with evidence charge, was taken back into custody and charged with homicide.
