20 year old Diwen Fan was last seen on May 5, 2022 in Chicago, Illinois. He disappeared after leaving his University of Chicago dorm room, and hasn’t been heard from since.
At the time of his disappearance Diwen Fan had recently moved to Chicago from China, and was about to start his junior year studying biology at the University of Chicago.
His family is worried about his mental health due to a note found in his dorm room, and believes his life is in severe danger.
There was indication that Diwen had an unsatisfactory academic record according to Yilun Hu, the family’s lawyer. His family lives in Beijing but brought in the Haung & Hu PC law firm to help find their son.
The family released the following statement:
Diwen, not everything in the world goes smoothly as we wish, so there is no need to be frustrated by things that are simply not in our control. Your parents know that you had tried your best in school and they really appreciate all the hard work you putted in for yourself and for your family. However, life is more than just being enrolled in a fine institution or accomplishing good grade; perseverance, resilience, and determination are the qualities we cherish. There is not a single task in your life that cannot be resolved, but the key is to always have an optimistic mentality.” Everyone you know believes in you and supports you, especially your family and friends. We are all looking forward to your safe return, so please contact us.
Diwen Fan was last seen leaving the University of Chicago campus on May 5, 2022. He was captured on surveillance video riding his bike at 5:15 pm near his dorm at 61st and Woodlawn. He appeared calm, and was wearing tidy clothes and a mask.
Diwen hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
His family found a Greyhound bus ticket under Diwen’s name from Chicago to San Antonio, but it’s unclear if he used it. It does not appear he completed the last part of the trip from Dallas, and there’s no proof he ever left Chicago.
Diwen’s credit cards have not been used since he went missing.
