Case Information
28 year old Chandice Cochran was last seen in Sutton, West Virginia on August 20, 2019. She disappeared after leaving her mother a note saying she was taking off for a little while.
Disappearance

At the time of her disappearance, Chandice Cochran was living with her mother in Sutton, West Virginia.
On August 20, 2019, her mother went to work and found Chandice gone when she returned. Chandice left a note stating “Mom, I took off for a little while. I’m in good hands, I promise. Be back shortly, please don’t worry, no need to. Call if you need me. Love you, Chan.”
All of her belongings were left behind at home.
Investigation
Investigators learned Chandice had been picked up from her mother’s house by Kristopher Speas on the afternoon of August 20, and that they traveled to the Birch River area of Nicholas County. Police believe they were there selling drugs.
The pair went to the home of a man named Sam Kelly, who says he last saw them around midnight. He says Chandice and Kristopher left his home on foot, but didn’t return.
Chandice’s phone was turned off around midnight on the day she disappeared.
At 7:00 am on August 21, 2019, Sam Kelly saw Kristopher Speas walking along Widen-Dille Road, a few miles from the Birch River. He was alone, with no signs of Chandice.
Speas claims he was under the influence of drugs on the night Chandice disappeared and does not clearly remember what happened. He has been interviewed multiple times and maintains his innocence in her disappearance.
Speas had outstanding warrants for failing to register as a sex offender, and was arrested on charges unrelated to Cochran’s disappearance. He is serving time on convictions for grand larceny, attempt to commit grand larceny and failure to register as a sex offender.
Chandice’s phone has never been found. A local resident found her change purse with her identification in the woods near Birch River not long after she disappeared.
In May 2024, West Virginia State Police executed a search warrant at a property in the 9100 block of Widen-Dille Road in Clay County in relation to Chandice’s disappearance.
Law enforcement says new information led to the search warrant, and that items found during the search were taken to the West Virginia State Police forensic lab for testing.
