27 year old Amos Mortier was last seen at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin on November 8, 2004. He returned home from school that afternoon, made a call, and hasn’t been heard from since.
Amos Mortier was born on April 28, 1977 to mother Margie Milutinovich. At the time of his disappearance he was living alone with his dog, a husky mix named Gnosis, in a rented house on Lacy Road in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.
He was a student at Madison Area Technical College, studying botany and ecology, with hopes of becoming an organic farmer.
He worked as an electrician, made and sold jewelry, and had sound equipment that he used as a deejay. He loved the outdoors, and would often camp, hike, and take long walks with his beloved dog.
On November 6, 2004, Amos Mortier went hiking with two friends and his dog. They then returned to Amos’ home off Lacy Road in a rural part of Fitchburgh, Wisconsin for dinner. One of the friends claims nothing seemed unusual or out of the ordinary.
On November 8, 2004, Amos was last seen at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin.
After attending classes, Amos returned home and made a phone call at 1:20 pm. This is the last known contact anyone had with him.
Beginning on November 9 his friends and family were unable to get in contact with him. Worried as the days went by with no contact, a couple of his friends eventually resorted to breaking into his home on November 13, 2004.
They found the dog’s bowl full, a record still spinning, and a check from Amos’ grandmother sitting on the counter, but Amos and his dog were nowhere to be found.
A step stool was found in the hall with a level and hammer, where it appears Amos had been hanging pictures.
On the morning of November 14 Amos’ friends contacted his mother, who then reported him missing to the Fitchburg Police Department.
All of Amos’ personal belongings, including his cell phone, wallet, keys, and two cars were found at his home in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. His backpack was inside his car, along with his lab notes from class on the day he disappeared.
Amos’ dog Gnosis was found at a neighbor’s house five days later, missing his collar. Friends and family don’t believe he would have ever willingly left his dog behind.
Authorities searched the areas around his home with the help of cadaver dogs, but found no evidence as to his whereabouts.
On April 13, 2005, Fitchburg police announced that they believed Amos’ case was a homicide investigation, and that his killing was likely linked to a $80,000 marijuana debt.
On April 19, 2005, police searched the home, office, and vehicle of a Madison music business owner who police describe as a “prime suspect” in Amos’ disappearance.
The suspect, Jacob Stadfeld, gave inconsistent statements to police, was near his home around the time of his disappearance, and owed money to Amos, according to one of Mortier’s friends.
In May investigators searched land owned by Stadfeld’s parents in Juneau County, but were unable to find enough evidence to make an arrest.
In September 2006 another suspect was implicated in grand jury testimony as having confessed to killing Amos. The witness claims the suspect said he stabbed Mortier and “fed him to pigs.” He allegedly then returned to Amos’ house, looted the safe, and let his dog loose. Again, no arrests were made in connection to Amos’ disappearance.
Police have since said there are a few people of interest in Amos’ case, but have been unable to gather enough evidence for an arrest.
In May of 2005 a woman in Tennessee claims to have seen a man matching Amos’ description at a music festival, however that sighting was unable to be verified.
Amos’ friends and family say the police were sidetracked by the drug ring, which shifted their focus away from investigating his disappearance.
The location of Amos Mortier, as well as the circumstance surrounding his disappearance, remains unknown.
Police have a few persons of interest in his case, but no arrests have been made in connection with his disappearance.
White male born on April 28, 1977. Amos has brown hair, blue/hazel eyes, stands 5’6 tall, and weighs 130 pounds.
